Impacts of pornography

The Impact of consumed Images: Rethinking Pornography

Many people watch porn, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to stimulate the imagination. However, commercial porn is problematic, as one in every eight porn films contains abuse and violence. Commercial porn rarely shows realistic sex. So called "Ethical porn" is produced according to ethical guidelines, but the nature of porn may still present challenges in representation & production. How are we affected by the images we consume? How can we discuss porn literacy?

Lured into the industry

Women & men are often lured into the porn industry. Many come from socio-economic vulnerable situations, carry trauma, and are exploited & forced to participate in porn films.

It´s not about shaming, but becoming aware.

Porn literacy isn’t about banning or shaming— masturbation is healthy. Porn literacy is about understanding what we’re watching and how it shapes our expectations around sex and relationships. When we build awareness, we expand our capacity for real consent, connection, and choice.

Representation of sex

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to stimulate your desire - it´s very natural to be curious about sex, and porn. However, we need to understand how porn affects how people relate to sex, and what´s going on behind the camera.

The majority of mainstream porn is rarely representative of real sex. Scenes are cut & edited. There is a lack of realistic portrayals of what women (in particular) want sexually and what makes women orgasm. Anal sex, for example, is often represented in a way that you don´t see the foreplay (or cleaning) required, and the risk of bacteria that can lead to candida infections.

Underlying trauma is common in the industry, and some porn films are actually real images of abuse. Even a person seemingly willing, may be coerced into participation behind the scenes.

Therefore we need a critical eye. We can make conscious choices. There are porn producers who work with ethical guidelines, which may be better than mainstream porn. There are also other ways to stimulate the imagination, such as erotic stories and audio porn. We help you navigate the issue. Read more below.

Ethical porn

Conscious choices

Some porn is produced with ethical guidelines, which means the actors are paid better, there is consent, and the porn shown can be made based on equality, and a feminist value foundation, providing better representation of sex, including womens orgasm. How do you know if the porn is produced that way?

The nature of pornogaphy itself provide challenges in production. One must keep in mind, that even ethical or feminist porn often has issues to it. Exploitation, consent in grey-zones, or bad representation may still occur in this category. Some porn sites, for example, have feminism as a category and still show destructive porn that is neither equal nor realistic, nor produced ethically. If you’re looking for feminist porn, you may still encounter harmful porn. We list some recommendations further down this page.

Mainstream porn

Issues and challenges in mainstream porn in regards to representation and production

Exploitation

Many women & men in the porn industry are lured into jobs by being offered, for example, “modeling jobs” at a young age (1). They are often economically vulnerable and many carry trauma. Some porn actors are forced and threatened to continue doing their job, exploited with power and money, and have a hard time leaving the industry even if they want to.

1 in 8 films depict violence

1 in 8 porn films show abuse material such as incest, rape, or underage content on major pornsites, according to a large data analysis (2). Children view porn between the ages of 8 and 17 and are exposed hardcore illegal content. It is important to promote a critical mindset about porn.

Documented abuse

There is harmful and illegal porn, involving minors and sexually and socioeconomically exploited women and men (3,4,5,6). Documented abuse occur on porn sites. In some cases, it may appear that the actor "wants" to participate, but they are coerced or manipulated into doing so behind the scenes.

Unrealistic representation

Realistic portrayals of what women specifically want sexually are often missing, as well as what makes women orgasm. Foreplay is often left out, along with any understanding of how long foreplay can take. We can look at real relationships, facts, and statistics if we want to get a proper understanding of real sex.

High-frequent use & violence

Several studies and statistics point to a connection between high-frequency porn consumption and violence against women in relationships and destructive attitudes about sex (7,2,6).

Desensitization & addiction

Many times, porn can lead tothe desire to watch more extreme porn and develop something called "desensitization," which means that "softer porn" no longer leads to arousal, and the porn consumer gradually seeks more extreme porn over time (2,3). Sometimes, porn and sex addiction also develops.
